An antique circa 1917 heavy silver plated serving tray from The Hotel Winton in Cleveland, Ohio. The Winton was once the grandest hotel in Cleveland, the first hotel to feature live radio broadcast from its ballroom, a hotel that would close down one of its restaurants in the winter to create a private indoor skating rink for patrons, but my favorite trivia tidbit about the Winton is it was Home to Chef Hector (Ettore) Boiardi, who we all now know as Chef Boyardee! After stints at the Ritz Carlton in New York and the Greenbrier, the Winton was the last place he was head chef before embarking on his own restaurant and prepared meals career. While at the Winton Hotel, he became known for his spaghetti dinners, which were so popular that customers started buying his sauce in milk bottles to take home. This demand led him to open his own restaurant, Giardino d'Italia, in 1924 and eventually start the factory production of prepackaged meals in 1928, using the anglicized name "Chef Boyardee."
In excellent condition, no major damage but there are lots of small surface scratches and utensil marks with minor tarnish. Marked with the hotel name on the base and a crest on the front.
Measures a bit over 12” long by 8” wide.
