An ultra-rare antique circa 1924 silver plated oyster sauce or soup bowl with figural oyster handles, from The States restaurant in San Francisco, California. The States Restaurant was a famous early 20th-century restaurant in San Francisco located at the intersection of Market and Fourth Streets. The restaurant began as the Heidelberg Inn in 1907, founded by a German immigrant named Hirsch. It was celebrated for its German food, private booths, and elaborately themed rooms. During the anti-German sentiment of World War I, the owners changed the name to The States. As part of the rebranding, they renamed the restaurant's private dining booths after the individual states of the union. It also re-stylized thematic interior spaces like an "Apple Orchard" and "Indian Grill". While researching this restaurant I came across some old postcards and ephemera that I've included in the last four images for historical context, these items are not included with the bowl. In excellent condition, no big dents or damage, just lots of tiny marks and small signs of use that you would expect from old hotel silver. It has polished up beautifully with some wear to the attached underplate and inside the bowl. Marked on the base with the restaurant name. Measures approximately 6 inches wide including the handles, 4.5 inches wide not including handles by 5 inches tall.
